Playa Gigante started as a fishing village, and it still is one — pangas pull up on the sand every morning with the day's catch. That heritage makes it one of the easiest, most rewarding places on Nicaragua's Pacific coast to wet a line, whether you want billfish offshore or a reef snapper straight off the deck. Here's how to fish here.
Three ways to fish at Gigante
| Style | Where | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Reef, off the shelf | Shankton Harbour's sea shelf | Casual, no boat needed — cast for reef fish right off the deck, about 20 steps from the water. Best around high tide. Great with kids. |
| Inshore panga | Just off the coast | Roosterfish, snapper, and jack with a local captain. Half-day trips, close to shore, beginner-friendly. |
| Offshore charter | The blue water | Tuna, dorado, wahoo, and billfish (sailfish, marlin). A full day out with a captain who knows the grounds. |
Fishing right off the deck
This is the Shankton Harbour party trick. Shankton Harbour is the only home in Gigante with its own private sea shelf — a natural rock platform about twenty steps from the house. At high tide it's superb for snorkeling and tide-pooling, and you can reef-fish right off the edge without ever getting in a boat. It's the kind of thing that keeps kids (and dads) busy for hours before breakfast.
What you'll catch
Nicaragua's Pacific is a genuinely world-class fishery, and the Tola coast sees a great mix:
- Inshore: roosterfish — the iconic, hard-fighting prize of this coast — plus snapper, jack crevalle, and mackerel.
- Offshore: dorado (mahi-mahi), yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and billfish including sailfish and marlin.
- Off the shelf: reef species and smaller snapper — perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
What's biting depends on the season and the day, and the local captains read it better than any chart. Tell us your dates and we'll point you at the right trip.
When to go
Inshore fishing for roosterfish and snapper is productive through much of the year. Offshore species and billfish run more seasonally, so the smart move is to let the captains advise around your travel dates rather than chase a calendar. For the weather and ocean conditions month by month, see our best time to visit Playa Gigante guide.
For families and first-timers
You don't need experience here. Reef fishing off Harbour's shelf is as simple as it gets, and an inshore panga trip is calm, close to shore, and a brilliant half-day with kids — the captains rig everything and coach you through it. It's often the highlight of a family trip.
Eat what you catch
This is a fishing village, so fresh fish is the whole point. Keep your catch and have our private chef cook it at the house that evening — ceviche, grilled whole snapper, fish tacos — or buy straight off the morning pangas on the beach. It doesn't get fresher.
How to arrange it
Easy — it's all handled on the ground. Our on-site GM, Nemer, arranges boats, captains, and gear for guests, from a two-hour reef session to a full offshore day. Just mention fishing when you book Shankton Harbour or Shankton Tower, and tell us who's coming and what you're after. Read more about the area on our Playa Gigante page.
Common questions
Can you go fishing at Playa Gigante?
Yes — Playa Gigante is a working fishing village, and there are three easy ways to fish: reef fishing right off Shankton Harbour's private sea shelf, an inshore panga trip with a local captain, or a full offshore charter. Our on-site GM, Nemer, arranges boats and captains for guests.
What fish can you catch near Playa Gigante, Nicaragua?
Inshore, the Pacific coast here is known for roosterfish, snapper, and jack crevalle. Offshore, captains target tuna, dorado (mahi-mahi), wahoo, and billfish such as sailfish and marlin — depending on the season and conditions. Local captains know the current bite.
Can you fish from shore at Playa Gigante, or do you need a boat?
Both. Shankton Harbour has its own sea shelf where you can reef-fish straight off the deck — about 20 steps from the water, best around high tide. For bigger fish, a local captain's panga or an offshore charter takes you out, and Nemer can arrange either.
When is the best time to fish at Playa Gigante?
Inshore fishing for roosterfish and snapper is good much of the year. Offshore species and billfish are more seasonal, so the best plan is to tell us your dates and let the local captains advise on what's biting. See our best-time-to-visit guide for the weather and seasons.
Can beginners and kids fish at Playa Gigante?
Absolutely. Reef fishing off Harbour's shelf and an easy inshore panga trip are both great for first-timers and families — the captains help with gear and technique, and you're never far from shore.
Can you eat the fish you catch?
Yes. Gigante is a fishing village, so fresh catch is part of the culture. Keep what you land and have our private chef prepare it at the house, or trade stories (and dinner) with the village fishermen.
